Cryptid: Bigfoot

State: NC

Season: Fall

This happened in the mid-1970s. A friend and I were out driving late one night and ended up on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We were heading north toward Virginia and had gone about nine miles when I noticed something large sitting in the middle of the road, about a quarter of a mile ahead.

As we got closer, we slowed down until we finally stopped about ten feet away. That’s when it stood up.

I’ve been hunting all my life and have spent more hours than I can count in the woods of North Carolina. I know what bears, deer, and every other animal around here look like. I had always believed I’d seen all the wildlife this state had to offer, but I had never seen anything like what was standing in front of us that night. It scared me more than anything I’ve ever experienced. There wasn’t any doubt in my mind, and this was not a bear.

The creature stood somewhere between seven and eight feet tall and looked like it weighed between 400 and 500 pounds. It was covered in black hair from head to toe, with broad shoulders and incredibly long arms that reached almost to its knees. It stood there for a few seconds, then turned and walked off the road into the woods. It leaned slightly forward as it walked, and in only four long strides it vanished into the darkness. I figured it covered around 25 yards in those four steps.

Our car had exceptionally bright headlights, but the whole time it kept its head turned away from the beams. Because of that, I never got a good look at its face. I remember feeling relieved when it walked away because I honestly thought it might charge the car or jump onto the hood. I was scared in a way I’d never been before.

Even after all these years, I can still picture that night as clearly as if it happened yesterday. I’ve spent a lifetime in the woods, and I’ve never seen anything before or since that compares to what my friend and I witnessed on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

It took me a long time to process what happened, and I still can’t explain what my son and I heard in June 2023.

I was 35, and my son was 12. We were fishing the New River near the North Carolina–Virginia border in Alleghany County, just outside Sparta, North Carolina. It was nearly dark, and we were wading back toward the boat ramp from the downstream side of the bridge off Farmers Fish Camp Road when the strangest sound I’ve ever heard echoed through the entire river valley.

Everything went silent.

The only way I can describe it is that it sounded like “20 people dying combined with the most guttural sounds I’ve ever heard.” I froze in the middle of casting and looked at my son. About ten yards away, he had frozen too. We both knew we were hearing the same thing.

I’ve hunted and fished these woods my entire life and have never heard anything remotely like it. The sound seemed to come from beyond the river bend, about 300 to 400 yards from us near the edge of the woods.

It lasted for about a minute, then stopped as suddenly as it had begun. Afterward, there was nothing but the sound of the river—no birds, no insects, no other sounds.

I stayed calm, and we quietly made our way back to the truck. When we got home, we searched online for anything that sounded similar but found nothing. I’ve heard bobcats scream before, but this was nothing like that.

I’m a two-time Iraq War veteran, and this remains one of the most unsettling experiences I’ve ever had. For a moment I thought I was imagining it, but the look on my son’s face confirmed he had heard it too.

Season: Summer

I’m from the UK and worked at a summer camp in North Carolina up in the Blue Ridge Mountains back in 2019. Once per session every cabin does their own overnight campout where we hike out higher into the woods for over an hour to our camp spot which is basically just a couple of long logs to sit on and a wooden structure to give shelter where everyone (2-4 counselors and 2 cabins of kids) would sleep under in their sleeping bag. After all the kids were in their sleeping bags ready for bed, me and my co counselor plus one other counselor stayed up and turned the campfire into a large bonfire and chilled for another few hours. One of the kids from my cabin couldn’t sleep because he felt petrified but couldn’t tell us why, he was hardly speaking, shaking etc, wanting to go back to camp, so we let him stay out with us by the fire as long as he didn’t get too close. Once it started to die down we put it out and went to bed. I could barely sleep since it was a bit chilly and not so comfy.. I’m not sure what time it started but I’d guess around 4am I started hearing a loud noise way off in the distance that slowly got louder and louder. I initially thought it was a siren when I first heard it then realized there are literally no roads for miles. Once i realized this I just lay completely still from fear and started listening intently as it grew louder and closer, it still sounded like an old siren of some sort but there were clear differences each time, longer and shorter gaps between etc, and howl like…. I’m pretty sure from when it first started it went on for at least 30-45 minutes with some gaps of silence before it would start again except closer and closer. It was super loud, then at its loudest it just stopped altogether. had no idea what it could be at the time, and didn’t even consider sasquatch since although I’d heard of bigfoot, its not really something people talk about in the uk. I also remember there were other even weirder sounds that night but I can’t remember what they were, only that i remember thinking how freaky it was.). Wondering if the kid from my cabin was so afraid that night from past summer camp outs, or stories from other campers, or maybe he could sense some bad energies. I’m sure someone else must have been awake to hear them, but nobody made a sound, and i definitely wasn’t gonna wake anyone up and cause a panic. I’m thinking about messaging my old co counselor who grew up as a camper at the camp and ask out of curiosity if he’s heard anything/heard anything that night. I’d forgotten about this until I watched the Big Lez show with sassy the sasquatch lol and ended up watching some bigfoot vids… then saw a comment that described the same noise I heard that night..

I was in Kershaw County and was doing some off-roading in the Liberty Hill wildlife management area which boarders Lake Wateree. I’ve never been a believer in Bigfoot, and I’m not sure I am now. But what I experienced out there was something that freaked me out enough to turn around and leave. The area is very remote and miles from the nearest paved road or any houses. Most trails out there are single lane abandoned forest service roads. Very hilly and dense forest. Often times when riding a new trail, I will stop and walk a few hundred yards ahead to make sure none of the trail is washed out or too rough for my Subaru to handle. That day wasn’t any different. I had parked and walked a couple hundred yards ahead, scouting out the trail when I started hearing what sounded like gibberish from 2 or three different voices. Couldn’t make out any words. Just gibberish sounds. It caught me off guard because I hadn’t seen any other signs of people that day. It was around 2 pm. It sounded to be just beyond the tree line. I stopped and the gibberish stopped. I figured it was turkeys or some other type of bird. I kept walking and it started again. I stopped again and the noise stopped. After a few seconds, what appeared to be a piece of board hitting against a tree could be heard. This went on for a while. It was at the moment that I knew it was time to go. I have no idea what it was. The area is in a community called Liberty Hill off hwy 97 between Camden and Great Falls.
