My great-grandmother was the one who told me this story. She was Cherokee, and her family lived deep in the mountains of western Watauga County back in the late 1800s. She said she was about 13 years old when it happened.

One day, she had gone down into a deep hollow to gather food along a creek. While she was there, she suddenly heard gunshots echoing from a ridge to the north. Just seconds later, she heard something or someone running hard down the mountainside in her direction.

It frightened her. Back then, it wasn’t safe for a young Cherokee girl to be alone if a white man came across her. So she quickly hid beneath some bushes and watched, waiting to see who or what was coming.

But it wasn’t a man.

What she saw instead was a tall, hairy creature she said around six and a half to seven feet tall covered in light reddish-brown hair. She knew right away what it was. She called it a “nun yunu wi,” one of the Cherokee names for what many today would call Bigfoot. She believed it was a male. The hair on its head and shoulders was noticeably longer than the rest of its body.

The creature moved down to the edge of the creek, about sixty feet from where she was hiding. There was a large pile of debris there—leaves, sticks, and dirt left behind from when the creek had flooded. She watched as it laid down beside the pile and began pulling the debris over itself, carefully covering its body until it was completely hidden.

Not long after, she heard men coming down the ridge from the same direction as the gunshots and the creature. That was enough for her. She knew she needed to leave before they arrived, so she quietly slipped away and made her way back home.

She told me she never saw any blood on the creature, but it moved like it might have been hurt walking hunched over, though still on two legs. She also said something else that stood out to her: she didn’t smell anything unusual. Other times when the “nun yunu wi” were said to be close, there was always a strong odor but not that day.

I live in N.C. and I’ve researched the topic for year’s. I’ve had a few encounters myself but yet to have an actual sighting. I’ve interviewed several that have and what got me interested in it was family members seeing one. My dad is passed but grew up in Boone NC. They lived on a road carved through the middle of a mountain and there was only a small amount of families that lived nearby. There had been a ton of Bigfoot related activity that not only my family experienced but other’s as well leading up to my aunt and uncle seeing one. My grandpa was a farmer and had a few cows at the time. He had a small calf that always managed to escape. It happened so regularly, my grandpa made the kid’s take turns fetching it. This particular time it was winter and one of my aunt and uncle’s turn to fetch the rascal. It was snowing so they got warm clothing on, including my uncle putting on a full faced toboggan and headed out. This calf always headed straight up the mountain behind the house. They followed its tracks in the fresh snow and up the steep mountainside. They made their way to a circular clearing and before stepping out from the woodline, they spotted a black figure laying in the snow about 50-60 feet to their left in the clearing. They thought this was a baby black bear bawled up and they was being extremely cautious knowing mama was probably near. My uncle accidentally stepped on a stick hidden under the blanket of snow and as a result, the figure sprang to it’s feet and it was NOT a black bear. They said it was probably right at 5 feet tall, covered in black hair and resembled a gorilla. It was starring at my uncle, cocked it’s head to the side and had a look of confusion upon its face. Remember, my uncle wore the full faced toboggan which has two round holes for the eyes and one for the mouth which does have an ape-like appearance to it. After all 3 of them starred at each other a few more sec’s, the creature beat it’s chest with both hand’s and ran the opposite direction into the wood’s on two feet! At this time, them and my family had never heard of Bigfoot. The only thing they could liken it to was a baby gorilla from which they had seen pictures of in books at school. This also was in 1966, a year before the infamous Patterson Gimlin film of 1967. After eventually seeing the infamous clip of the female Bigfoot strolling across the sandbar in Northern California, they knew that what they seen was a juvenile version that possibly had gotten lost. I was born in 1989 and after hearing this story growning up, I’ve been obsessed with the topic ever since.

Staying up in the mountains in a small southwest North Carolina town since this past Sunday. Have gone to town to socialize and have a drink/dinner and came back between 10:30-11pm every night.
Before anyone says anything about me being drunk or having too many, it’s been a single beer which was drank when I first got there, meaning it’s been 3-4 hours since I had it by the time I have been getting back.
Honestly it’s been unnerving getting out of my car at night. It’s literally pitch black. The sounds of the animals are super intense since it’s so quiet. Mostly bugs and crickets or whatever but I kept feeling on alert like I was being watched. Didn’t think anything of it, just thought I was paranoid because of the darkness and bolted down the driveway and into the house.
Monday and Tuesday night same thing…kept having a weird feeling of being watched even tho I didn’t see anything.
Then Wednesday night will be a night I will never forget. I was driving back again and it was a little after 11pm. I turned off the main road onto this little gravel road that kind of goes around a bend with thick woods on the left and a cornfield on the right and of course I had my high beams on since there are no lights anywhere around.
I come around the bend onto a stretch of straight road and I see this massive creature standing in the road. I slammed the brakes on and immediately just felt panic because I didn’t know what I was looking at. It was HUGE…like 7-8 feet tall and hairy. As I sat there frozen looking at it, it slowly turned toward me and looked for a second, then kind of fast walked/jogged back into the woods on the left side of the road and was gone. However, the way it moved was weird. I can’t really describe it…didn’t look normal to me.
I know what I saw but I still don’t believe I saw it. I am an analytical person by nature, a software engineer who was raised by scientists that taught me to question everything but always demand proof before you believe it. As such, I never really believed in bigfoot, per se, as I didn’t see proof, but now it’s kind of shaken my foundation of how I view reality to the core.
I have seen a black bear. I’ve seen a black bear standing up. It was NOT a black bear. It looked like a giant gorilla mixed with a Wookie but dark colored. Unless a giant gorilla just escaped from a local zoo, I don’t have an explanation for what I saw. I’m still shook by it even a day later and I haven’t really slept since because all I can do when I close my eyes is see a replay of that over and over again in my mind and I honestly don’t want to remember it, I just want to pretend I never saw it so I can go back to my own view of reality again.
Also noticed as I drove past where it was there was a strong smell of what I can only describe as exceedingly strong BO like if a person didn’t take a shower for a year times 10. Didn’t have the windows down but had the vent going because for whatever reason the windshield constantly wants to fog up so I need to blast the air on it while driving to prevent it.
I saw what I can only describe as a bigfoot and I kinda feel like I’ve been being watched by them since I have been here. Maybe the watching part has all been in my imagination but every time I get out of the car at night I have a huge adrenaline burst and I get a knot in the pit of my stomach and I just want to run as fast as I can to get in the house.
I’ve been researching all day and reading everything I can find because I need to understand this more. I am not a person that can have something like this happen and just go on about their life. I need to know more about this now. What it is, why it’s here, how it got here, where did it come from, etc.
I am sure people will tell me I am full of it and I saw something else, but I know what I saw and I know there is nothing else it could have been.

My mom, father, and I were visiting the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in Dare county North Carolina. We were driving along Milltail Rd and didn’t see anything ahead of us. I looked down a backroad to the right and saw an American black bear. We drove slightly down the backroad and out of sight of the main road to see the bear better. Once we finished observing the bear we backed out onto the main road again. And when we looked ahead we then saw a large figure had appeared in the distance. My father asked if it was another bear but we almost immediately noticed this creature was bipedal. It looked like a large man with long arms. We couldn’t see any colorful clothing or a backpack, the creature was completely black from a distance. We assumed it was just a hiker and continued down the road towards it. We noticed it was walking weird. It was walking with a bit of a rock back and forth and as we got closer we could see that its arms were swinging. When my mother got out her binoculars to look at it, she noticed that whatever it was had a lighter brown coloration on its top half and a dark brown/black coloration on its bottom half. Though she was unable to make out any more details as the gravel path caused the car to shake. My mother does report that she could see it looking back at us in an almost panicked manner through the binoculars. Believing that it was still a hiker, despite no known trails on that street, we continued down the road. We were a distance away when it suddenly bent down and leapt with both legs across a creek and into the swampy brush. It happened so quickly we only saw a blur. No human could move at those speeds. We immediately stopped the car in shock, and began going through possible scenarios. It was most certainly not a bear based on its movements and we ruled out humans based on the speed it disappeared at and the way it jumped. My father says it “took a hard right, lunged, and was gone.” Additionally we didn’t hear any loud noises as it ran off, though our windows were rolled up at the time. We didn’t have any music playing.
We went back to the location the next day to test out distance and height. My mother (5’4) stood where we believe the creature leapt off as my father re-drove the route. We quickly realized the creature was much larger than we initially thought. At the same distance, my mother was MUCH smaller than the figure we say that day. Not to mention visibility the day of the sighting was low (foggy weather with a consistent drizzle). Whatever this was, Bigfoot or something else, was at least 7ft tall.
It’s also important to note that this area is remote swamp land home to red wolves, black bears, and gators. Additionally the location where we were driving was not near any hiking trails. The forest was swampy, thick with brush, and impossible to see into. No human in their right mind would go in there with the gators and other critters.

Season: Winter

I grew up mostly in Anson County, North Carolina, and my first encounter happened when I was about 11 or 12 years old. It was the year 2000, and that winter brought more snow than I had ever experienced in the area. Many residents were without power for days. Toward the end of the storm, I went to spend the weekend at a friend’s house. Her home sat in a quiet, rural area surrounded by trees, with open farm fields across the road and only a few houses scattered far apart.

One afternoon, my friend and I went outside to play in the snow. We started walking toward the tree line behind her yard. When we were about 100 feet away, we suddenly heard a deep growl almost a roar that stopped us both instantly. It was a sound neither of us had ever heard before, and I haven’t heard anything like it since. My friend ran straight back to the house, but I stood frozen for a moment, overwhelmed with fear. We never saw anything, but the sound alone was enough to leave a lasting impression.

Years passed, and life went on. Then in 2019, I had another experience one that would stay with me even more vividly. My boyfriend and I were staying at a friend’s house while they were away for the year. The property was secluded, with large open fields on two sides and, behind the house, a small pond bordered by woods just beyond it.

One night or rather early morning around 4 a.m., I was sitting on the back deck with my dog. It was warm out, and I had decided to do some journaling. My boyfriend had to be up at 4:30 for work, so I was just finishing up when I stood to go wake him. As I turned toward the pond and tree line, something caught my eye.

There was a large, lone tree standing between the house and the pond, just outside the reach of the building’s light. Near that tree, I saw what I initially thought was a person. I could make out its outline, and I could hear it shifting its weight from one foot to the other. Before I could fully process what I was seeing, the figure suddenly dropped—from standing on two legs to moving on all fours—and ran toward the tree line.

The speed was unreal. I cannot emphasize enough how impossibly fast it moved. And the way it moved… it was wrong. Completely unnatural. In that moment, I didn’t know exactly what it was, but I knew without a doubt what it wasn’t. It wasn’t a bear, a deer, or anything else I could logically explain.

For a long time, I questioned what I had seen. Part of me wondered if I had somehow imagined it, but I’m not the kind of person who hallucinates, and I had no reason to make something like that up. I also didn’t tell many people I knew how it would sound, and I wasn’t interested in the strange looks or disbelief.

A couple of years later, I came across a video about Dogman on YouTube. As I watched, something clicked. The height, the speed, the way it moved it all lined up with what I had seen that night. Even though I didn’t get a clear look at its features in the dark, I felt certain that whatever I encountered was the same type of creature being described.

What unsettles me the most now is the thought of how long it may have been standing there, watching me before I noticed it. At the same time, I never felt a sense of dread or evil from it. I was shocked—completely caught off guard but not overwhelmed by fear. And I’ve often thought that if it had wanted to harm me, it had every opportunity to do so.

But it didn’t. And that’s something I still can’t fully explain.

Season: spring

I live in coastal North Carolina near the South Carolina state line, but I keep a camper set up permanently in Cross, SC at Black’s Camp on Lake Moultrie near the Diversion Canal.

Just before you enter the campground on Blacks Camp Road, there’s a gated dirt road where I sometimes do target practice since I can’t shoot where I live in my subdivision back in NC. This past spring, I brought about ten guns down there and went through roughly 250 rounds of ammunition. By the end of the evening, I was completely out of ammo.

As I started packing my guns and targets back into my truck, I suddenly heard something heavy walking in the thick brush directly beside me. It wasn’t a small animal. Whatever it was had weight to it. The vegetation was so dense I couldn’t see anything, but I could clearly hear it moving. I stepped toward the edge of the brush. It stopped.

That’s when I got an uneasy feeling. I had just fired 250 rounds, and now something large was standing that close to me.
I climbed up on my truck’s bumper to get a better look into the thicket. I still couldn’t see anything — but I had the distinct sense that whatever it was could see me.

Here’s what really bothered me: when I turned my attention toward the brush and tried to spot it, it wouldn’t move. But the moment I looked away to load something into the truck or shift my focus, it would start moving again.

It felt deliberate. Almost intelligent. I eventually left without ever seeing what it was, but I made a decision right then and there — I would never shoot down there again without extra ammunition.

At the time, Bigfoot never crossed my mind. I figured it was probably a bear or maybe a hog. But the more I’ve thought about it, the more that explanation doesn’t sit right. Whatever was in that brush seemed to understand exactly when I was looking — and exactly when I wasn’t.

And that area around Lake Moultrie could absolutely support something like Sasquatch.
